This is David’s third book – the second of interesting short stories. Some are based on his own experiences out on our vast and beautiful mountains hunting deer, and other times down on the flats searching out rabbits and geese. Even as he approaches his 80th birthday, he is full of memories of his earlier years of being out in the wide open spaces where the rivers run wild and threatening and the mountain peaks beckon – cold though they may be. Then again there’s stories of how things used to be, learning skills, farm life and survival skills. Along with his own stories, this time he has included the experiences of friends and other family members. The ‘call of the wild’ runs in the family it seems and so their stories add yet another flavour to this book which should stir up the senses for those outdoors-loving Kiwis who also enjoy reading of others’ escapades. So, there’s a bit of the past and a bit of the present; a variety of flavours for the interested reader to savour as you sit for a while with a cuppa, put your feet up and take in a story or two.
